Rimba Executive Housing areas

This week jungle trekking took us nears Rimba Executive Housing areas. We left UBD around 4.40 pm on Wednesday and arrive at our trekking area 10 minutes afterwards. I led a group of 12 students and left 5 minutes after the 2^nd group set out their venture all the while managing to complete the whole journey approximately 1hour 30 minutes soon after.

I have to admit that I was pretty anxious before we set out, but after stumbling onto our marker (polka dot pink ribbon) one after the other my confidence began to build up. Our track this time, I supposed was a bit more interesting as we came across animal track and plants that was not part of our trail last time.

The one that was still imprinted in my mind was the one where we found wild boar and its infant hoofs mark, I was amazed how strong it was judging from the clearing it dug out. In addition to that we were privileged to come across its home, a depression made on elevated hillside framed by tree roots.

Plants that I remembered were kudup-kudup (professed to have healing property), sage (natural alternatives for water treatment), halia and simpur (traditionally and perhaps still used for packaging food).

Overall, I think the trip was educational plus my role as a leader had trained me to be more focus to my surrounding in the near future.

This is my first BEAP trip for this semester. It was so so good to be back again. As usual the hill was steep but it was stable to walk on.I didn't concentrate much on my surrounding as i was busy catching up with my group members.

As i was the bin manager for that day, I was sad to see that there were a lot of rubbish thrown near the roadside especially plastic bottles. I think these people need to be educated so that they do not throw rubbish inconsiderately. Overall the trip was fun and enjoyable. i am looking forward for the next trip....

Trip to diplomatic residential area, 21st March 2007

I'm really happy that BEAP is held again this semester. The first trek for the semester was interesting enough. Some of us have already been to the trekking site from last semester's trek but good to see the site again. They still haven't done anything about the abandoned housing project, which is a shame. Maybe we can mention it to the BEAC and they might want to do something about it..

Forest hill near the Loas' diplomat resident; 21st March (wed), Siew Noy

Well, I didn't know we're going to a real forest (which is good in my view). I originally thought we're going to a well-known recreational park in Brunei. I think this is a good chance to venture and explore new potential research area for students doing biology course.

Before trekking I felt excited going into the forest. However, during the trekking the groups were walking too fast and didn't stop for a while to take a good look at the surroundings.

But nonetheless, the trekking activity serves as a good work out exercise for me. As for trekking experiences, there was no expert present to explain interesting stuffs found in the forest. So I guess there were less experiences gain.

Overall, the trekking activity was alright and not that bad at all, at least no students were found injured. So I will look forward to attend the next trekking activity.

I enjoy the walk. It was not as tiring as I expected and the scenery was interesting. Looking forward to the next one!!!

The trekking was nice and easy. I did not face any hard challenges or problems during the trek. Sadly, the learning expectations that I had for the trek were not met. My recommendation is to have an expert (perhaps a biologist?) with us during the trekking so that we can understand the environment better.
